Intellectual Property Issues
Affect Nearly All Integrators

To get a clear idea of what makes a business
successful, it's often necessary to look beyond a warehouse full of
products or a series of completed installs. The real secrets of an AV
integrator's competitiveness may be springing continuously from the
imaginations of its key people in the form of inventions, designs, and
ideas.
Integrators need to be more aware of the value of this intellectual
property (IP) and what they can—or indeed, what they must— do
in order to protect it. That was the premise underlying two recent
initiatives by InfoComm, a new white paper on IP, and a pair of
regional roundtables in Chicago and New York on IP issues in the AV
industry.
Presenters stressed that integrators with IP concerns should obtain
their own legal advice tailored to their specific circumstances. Still,
they offered some general advice to stimulate awareness and thinking.

Allen & Heath's iDR Solves
Emergency and Safety Audio Distribution Needs at Leading Fire
Extinguisher Manufacturing Facility
Amerex of Trussville, Ala., has installed an Allen & Heath iDR
system to manage audio matrixing and distribution of important
operational and safety functions including fire and tornado alarms,
telephone paging, and the shift-break alarm. Designed and installed by
Larry Bounds and Barry Henry of the EBS group, from Odenville, Ala., in
conjunction with Amerex's inhouse system technicians, the iDR-4 system
also includes the optional PL-8, a four input/output logic contact
closure unit.
"We chose the iDR because the programming of the box is very simple and
the processor is very solid. We were able to install the system very
quickly without any of the employees knowing," states Bounds. "We have
also used the iDR in many other installations and we have found it to be
a flexible and reliable solution."
