Elegant Asian Aesthetic Set for Oscar Ball
Cool colors, clean lines and an elegant Asian aesthetic will mark this year's Academy Awards Governors Ball, which follows the Oscar ceremony on Feb 22. The event team headed by Los Angeles-based Sequoia Productions offered a media preview at the Kodak Theatre on Monday. Parsons chairs with tall, narrow backs are wrapped tightly in silky stretch velvets in bronze and pewter. Rectangular tables, some featuring troughs down the center for floral, are topped with nubby linens shot with metallic strands and runners embroidered with discreet floral motifs. Clear, square chargers are accompanied by stainless flatware with bamboo-shaped handles and cylindrical stemware flaring at the base. Scenic fabrication is credited to Glendale, Calif.-based Ethos Design; tabletop will come from Los Angeles-based Classic Party Rentals and its Unique Tabletop Rentals arm ... For more, click here.


The Special Event '09 Opens in San Diego
Event professionals from throughout the world gathered today in San Diego for The Special Event 2009, which runs Jan. 28-30 at the San Diego Convention Center. The slate of education programs launched yesterday, with seminars including "Masters of Disasters: Wedding Emergencies Solved," "Events in Tents," "Event Trends 2009: The Hottest Consume Trends in Europe, the Middle East and Asian," "How to Green Your Event" and "How to Enter the Gala Awards and Win." Today will bring the Opening General Session with the announcement of the winners of the Tabletop Gallery competition, the sold-out Wedding Luncheon, and the Welcome Event--co-sponsored by NACE--at trendy night spot On Broadway. Avia Savannah Ready to Host Events
Savannah, Ga.-based Avia Savannah has opened. The six-story hotel, which is located in the heart of the city’s historic district, features 151 rooms and suites. The property’s 2,765-square-foot Event Room is ideal for conferences and special events, management says. The hotel features the Terrace + Pool, an al fresco setting with intimate seating nooks and private cabanas; a fire pit is also available. The Kitchen’s menu offers regional dishes and culinary traditions; The Wine Bar is also available for private parties. For more information, click here.

M Resort to Open
Las Vegas-based The M Resort, Spa and Casino will open on March 1; the property will feature nine restaurants and five destination bars. Guests can view the Las Vegas Strip through floor-to-ceiling windows; outdoor dining terraces will also be available. Studio B will offer a live-action cooking studio; chefs will demonstrate culinary techniques for guests. The Red Cup Cafe, which will feature 1920s art deco-inspired decor, will be available for intimate gatherings 24 hours daily. Phoenix Convention Center Completes Expansion
Phoenix-based Phoenix Convention Center has completed its 635,000-square-foot North Building; the update is the final phase in the center’s $600 million dollar expansion. The four-level building offers a 45,000-square-foot ballroom and 11 exhibit halls; 56 meeting rooms and 20 climate-controlled loading docks are also available. All pre-function spaces and meeting rooms offer wireless Internet connectivity. The building also features the Metro Marche, which offers six dining venues. For more information, click here.

Wooden Serving Boards
Melrose Park, Ill.-based American Metalcraft introduces its series of black wooden serving boards; indentations in the boards hold white porcelain sauce cups. The boards are available in five different styles; three types of cups are available. The trays are ideal for dramatic appetizer or dessert presentations, the manufacturer says. The company also offers a square board with four cup indentations; a rectangular board with eight cup indentations is also available.

Demountable System for Trucks
Glassboro, N.J.-based Demountable Concepts announces its demountable hybrid system for lower gross, vehicle-weight trucks. With the system, entire orders can be loaded directly into a free-standing demountable body at a location or venue; the empty truck body is then “swapped” with a loaded body. Each truck’s chassis is equipped with a lock-down system that facilitates the mounting and demounting of free-standing cargo bodies. The company has installation and service center throughout North America.

Customized Sweets for Parties
New York-based The Perfect Present introduces its S’more Smoochies; the sweet treats are ideal for party favors and gift bags, the manufacturer says. The treats can be customized to match event themes and colors; each one is individually wrapped in a cello bag and ribbon-tied or custom-sealed. Handmade to order, the sweets include signature toppings and edible decorations; a festive “Valentines” s’more is currently available.
