AIA estimates US aerospace sales of $218.1b ($49.7b civil aircraft) in 2011 vs $210.6b ($48.2b) in 2010, and forecasts sales to drop 0.2% to $217.7b ($51.7b) in 2012. [MORE]

1907 - The US Army issues specification no. 486, an advertisement and specification for a "heavier-than-air flying machine." Though issued for bids, only the Wright brothers are expected to respond.

1908 - Port-Aviation, the world's first aerodrome, is opened 12 miles outside of Paris.

1928 - Wilkins and Eielson make the first flight over Antarctica in Lockheed Vega, with financial support from William Randolph Hearst.

1930 - First flight of the Tupolev ANT-6 heavy bomber prototype.

1939 - Aircraft manufacturer Anthony Fokker dies.

1968 - Boeing launches the first 747-200, with an order from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

1972 - Aircraft designer Andrei Tupolev dies.

1978 - The maiden flight of the first solar-powered aircraft, Solar One, is achieved.

1990 - Aircraft engineer, industry leader and innovator Kelly Johnson dies.
