The telecom industry is changing and evolving so rapidly these
days,
it's sometimes hard to keep up. It's also difficult to separate hype
from reality and real trends from blind alleys.
From our top shelf this week comes a feature by Executive Editor Rich
Karpinski. Rich studies a handful of key industry numbers, figures and
metrics — hard data or at least strong, educated guesses — to
create
a snapshot of where the industry is today, and where it's heading.
This industry has so many facets to it these days we could have
presented a hundred different numbers and only scratched the surface or
presented a partial view of reality. But we've done our best to capture
the figures that stood out to us and that represented the real trends
and emerging stories that are shaping our industry. Let our numerical
tour begin...

MagicJack founder, and inventor of its technology, Dan Borislow,
doesn’t like the term voice-over IP (VoIP). He thinks it has a
negative connotation in an industry prone to struggles. Why not call it
what it is – really, really cheap phone service? With the largest
network in the United States and growth on track to surpass market
leaders Comcast and Vonage, MagicJack has arguably earned the right to
call the service whatever it wants.

The success of MagicJack in numbers alone is without a doubt
notable. The company is selling around 8,000 devices per day and has
experienced 25% week-over-week growth since it first came onto the VoIP
scene in September. Still, not everyone is singing Jack’s praises.
The
company has left many Jack users frustrated with its customer service
department.

closer to the one-year anniversary of the launch of Apple’s iPhone,
the shady dealings around the handset have grown omnipotent. Come on,
there is only so much teasing we can take.
