EDITOR'S PERSPECTIVE
The TMF event horizon
By Tim McElligott

Now that the whole of the OSS world has safely returned home from TeleManagement World in Dallas to practice their software development and marketing voodoo, the question lingers: How has the world been changed by TMW?

It was a very successful event by North American standards. But unless something positive comes of it, it was just another event. Oh, we at Telephony had fun with our video coverage, and forum board members got to introduce a lot of new themes and initiatives. Vendors got to strut their stuff on the Catalyst stage, and BT even announced a significant initiative at the event. More important, the forum challenged itself to reach out to the media world--or die. Well, nothing so dramatic, but it will be important to extend the forum's reach and thereby its members' reach to this strong new dynamic in communications.

However, all this happened within the confines of the Adam's Mark Hotel. It must carry beyond that. TMF members can't afford to allow the TMW event to become an event horizon, a boundary from which the illuminating ideas emanating from the forum never reach the outside world.

In six months time, when the TMF holds its next event in Nice, France (which is a very successful event by European standards), and after which it holds its Team Action Week, the industry needs to see some results. We need to be more than a step closer to formulating a common definition of a Service Delivery Platform. The Telecom Media Convergence group needs to have firm commitments from the media world. PrOSSpero must prove itself truly necessary. Network operators need to know that their software vendors are behind them with interoperable solutions more than they are behind them fighting amongst each other to control the next standard.

I think it's quite doable, as they say.
