GM
PULLS PLUG ON MEDIUM-DUTY TRUCK BUSINESS
General Motors Corp, which filed for bankruptcy protection a week ago,
said that it would cease production of medium-duty trucks by July 31
after attempts to sell the operation failed. GM plans to cease
production of Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC Topkick medium-duty trucks by
July 31. The automaker sold about 20,000 of the vehicles last year, down
from roughly 30,000 in 2007, as the U.S. economy sank into a deep
recession.
NAVISTAR
REPORTS $12 MILLION PROFIT IN 2Q
Navistar International Corporation reported second-quarter profits of
$12 million, equal to $0.16 per diluted share, on $2.8 billion in net
sales and revenues. Although the industry outlook remains challenging,
Navistar has taken actions to help mitigate the adverse effects on its
profitable growth, sustaining its momentum to deliver another year of
expected net income
GLOBAL
MEDIUM AND HEAVY TRUCKS MARKET SHRINKS BY 2.9% IN 2008
The global medium and heavy trucks market shrank by 2.9% in 2008 to
reach a value of $295.4 billion, according to Research and Markets’s
new report, "Medium & Heavy Trucks: Global Industry Almanac." In 2013,
the global medium and heavy trucks market is forecast to have a value of
$456.1 billion, an increase of 54.4% since 2008.

DEXTER
AXLE ACQUIRES VENTLINE, DOOR BUSINESS FROM PHILIPS PRODUCTS
Dexter Axle completed the acquisition of the RV, cargo, and
horse-trailer door business from Philips Products, as well as its
Ventline product offerings, and the hiring of 112 Philips employees into
Dexter.

VAN, TRUCK REGISTRATIONS STILL DOWN
UK Van and truck registrations were down 49.2% in the month of May and
down 31.4% to 271,761 for the rolling year, according to official data
just out from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. Within
those totals, trucks were down 44% in May and down 16.8% to 47,716 for
the rolling year, while vans dropped 50.2% for the month and 33.9% to
224,045 for the rolling year.

OF SOUTH TEXAS NAMED 2008 KENWORTH DEALER OF YEAR
Kenworth of South Texas in San Antonio, Texas, was named 2008 Kenworth
Dealer of the Year for the United States and Canada at the annual
Kenworth Dealer Meeting held recently in Columbus, Ohio.

TRUCKS NAMES 2008 DEALERS OF THE YEAR
Volvo Trucks North America recently announced its 2008 Dealers of the
Year for the U.S. and Canada. M & K Quality Truck Sales, Byron Center,
Michigan, was named the U.S. Dealer of the Year and Beaver Truck Centre,
Winnipeg, Manitoba, was named the Canada Dealer of the Year.

NATIONAL EXPANDS FUEL-HAULING SERVICE CAPABILITIES
Since launching the new fuel service in 2008, Schneider National has
expanded its fleet capacity and extended its service area to include
additional locations throughout the Midwest, Southeast and the Southern
coast, and is considering additional expansion in the Northeast in the
near future.
AGTEC
SUPPORTS TRUCK WEIGHT INCREASE
The Agricultural Transportation Efficiency Coalition (AgTEC), which
supports increasing the overall gross vehicle weight limits for trucks,
has analyzed and made available 11 independent studies affirming the
safety and economic benefits of bringing U.S. truck-weight limits closer
to Canadian and European standards, and quantifying the relationship
between truck weights and road and bridge wear. Government agencies
conducted or endorsed each study.

SHIPPING ADVOCACY GROUP FORMS TO INCREASE WEIGHT LIMITS FOR U.S.
TRUCKS
More than 100 associations and companies—including Kraft Foods,
MillerCoors and International Paper—today officially launched the
Coalition for Transportation Productivity (CTP), urging Congress to
responsibly raise the federal vehicle weight limit on U.S. interstates.
CTP supports the Safe and Efficient Transportation Act of 2009 (H.R.
1799), which would increase the interstate weight limit to improve
trucking productivity and allow for safer highways, a cleaner
environment and a stronger economy.

ANNOUNCES A NEW NORTHEAST U.S. LOCATION
PACCAR Leasing Company (PacLease) continues its North American
franchise network expansion with the addition of a new full-service
lease location in Lansing, MI. The new PacLease location is operated by
Eastern Michigan PacLease, which has current PacLease locations in
Sterling Heights, Dearborn, and Clinton Township, Mich.

ATA
TELLS CONGRESS CAP-AND-TRADE WILL HARM TRUCKING INDUSTRY
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) told a Congressional
Committee that a cap-and-trade program would impose significant costs on
the trucking industry and American consumers. In his statement on behalf
of ATA, Tommy Hodges, ATA First Vice Chairman said that the American
Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2454) threatens to
significantly increase fuel costs and jeopardizes the economic viability
of trucking companies.

VEHICLE OPERATOR SHOW GETS GREEN LIGHT FOR 2010
The Commercial Vehicle Show Partnership announced that the Commercial
Vehicle Operator Show will be held April 13-15 at the NEC in Birmingham,
England. The event will enable exhibitors to present the widest possible
range of products and services used in the day-to-day running of
commercial vehicles of all sizes and types, with a particular accent on
environmental impact, improved efficiency and profitability.

2009 STILL ON IN BELGIUM
Despite the economic crisis that has hammered the transport industry
and forced the cancellation of numerous trade shows, Trailer 2009 will
be held in Kortrijk, Belgium, from Nov. 20-24. With a motto of “Beyond
The Transport Crisis,” Trailer 2009 means that exhibitors and the
trailer team are keeping tabs on the bigger picture and trying to look
past the difficult times.
