UPS Aids E-Waste Management
Atlanta -- United Parcel Service Inc. is creating a service to help manage and dispose of used electronics, or e-waste. Through the UPS Supply Chain Solutions´ Asset Recovery and Management service, the company will oversee the repair, recycling or disposal of such electronics as computers, cell phones and printers in an environmentally sound manner. The service is designed to provide companies with a single point of contact, enhanced visibility and tracking and governmentally compliant documentation, according to UPS.

UPS Supply Chain Solutions, through its vendors, also offers resale and remarketing services on behalf of companies for their used electronics. The company's distribution facilities will serve as consolidation points for used electronics.

Massachusetts DEP Says No To Transfer Station
Brockton, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has nixed plans for a solid-waste transfer station in Brockton that would receive up to 1,000 tons of garbage a day. Locally based Champion City Recovery proposed the facility. According to The Boston Globe, the DEP ruled against the station in part because Champion City was unable to prove that the proposed site has been used for solid-waste management in the past, which state law requires because the site is near a public drinking water source. The agency also determined that the company did not supply sufficient information about traffic safety around the site and the facility's effect on air quality. Champion City has said it will continue to push for the facility.

Elsemere Canyon Saved from Becoming Landfill
Santa Clarita, Calif. -- Browning Ferris Industries (BFI) has formally withdrawn its permit applications to make Elsemere Canyon a trash dump, ending a 15-year-long battle between the company and local residents. BFI, which owns about 1,200 acres of the canyon, conceded defeat in a letter dated May 5 but released Monday, May 17.

The city of Santa Clarita and the county manager fought to save Elsemere Canyon from the same fate as nearby Sunshine Canyon, where BFI currently operates a landfill.

The future of the 1,200 BFI-owned acres is still uncertain, according to City Councilwoman Marsha McLean.

Conn. Trash Authority to Recoup Money
Hartford, Conn. -- Connecticut's quasi-public trash authority will be recouping a $500,000 donation it made to the National Geographic Society in 1997. Last month, state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal declared the donation illegal. The money is expected to be returned this week.

The Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority (CRRA) board authorized the grant, which was going to create the Connecticut Geography Education Fund. A matching grant was to be made by the National Geographic Educational Foundation.

Former CRRA Chairman Peter Ellef believed associating with National Geographic would benefit CRRA and its programs, and asked that the grant be expedited. The CRRA has been under fire in recent years for a failed $220 million deal with Enron in 2001 that was considered an illegal loan.

Danville Business to be Charged for Trash Collection
Danville, Kent. -- Danville businesses soon will be charged for garbage pickup. City Manager Darrell Blenniss expects the city to collect a total of $40,000 to $45,000 from the fees, which will pay for city employee raises.

Some businesses currently receive free daily or weekly garbage pickup, while others receive no service. As a matter of equity, all businesses will now be charged for garbage collection.
