The Curotto Can is the result of fifteen years of on-the-route
development. It has the highest productivity of any automated curbside
collection system. Per shift the Curotto Can services more homes than
either an ASL or a rear loader. The cab forward pickup both reduces
workman's compensation costs and allows the operator to easily see and
remove contaminants from the waste stream. The Curotto Can can be
ordered complete and installed on new front loaders or retrofitted to
existing units.

Come Talk Trash
with Us!
The Heap is a blog featuring waste industry news and
analysis written by the staff of Waste Age magazine and guest
commentators. It appears on WasteAge.com.
Below are links to recent posts. After reading them, tell us what you
think in the comment threads. We want to hear from you!
• Mines and Yours
Workers at a waste facility in New Bern, N.C., no doubt snapped to
attention when they came across not one but two unexploded landmines.
Police and a bomb squad were called in to have a look. The devices
turned out to be S-mines, incendiary devices that date to World War II,
colorfully referred to in military circles as “Bouncing Bettys.”

• When the NRA Meets the NRC
It is a common sight to see prisoners on work detail picking up trash
along the side of the road. With any luck, they won’t run into the
latest group to take on roadside cleanup: the Minnesota Carry Permit
Holders.

Announcements
• Phoenix-based Republic Services has announced that
two of its safety films have each received a CINE Golden Eagle Award.
The films are “Our Safety Is in Your Hands,” which is a pedestrian
safety awareness film, and “Defensive Driving — the Focus Six.”
“These training and awareness films are an important part of our
effort to advance a culture where safety is always our number one
priority and where we always make the right choices to protect the
public and our employees,” said Shawn Mandel, manager of safety for
Republic Services, in a press release. “Our company is committed to
operating safely.”
• The most recent Waste Age 100, published in the magazine's August
issue, is now available online. But unlike past years, this year's
online listing is much more than a mere reprinting of the rankings.
This year, the online ranking comes with quick access to detailed
information about each of the firms, such as stock symbols, links to Web
sites, a brief profile and recent Waste Age articles on the company. All
of this is available simply by clicking on the company name.
This is a resource you can't find on any other site. Check it out now by
