DEP Releases Plan for 75 Percent Recycling Rate
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection
(DEP) has released its recommendations on how the state can achieve a 75
percent recycling rate. The department was required to produce its
report by Jan. 1 by the state Energy, Climate Change and Economic
Security Act of 2008.

Urges Changes to Proposed Greenhouse Gas Tailoring
Rule
The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA)
has submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
over a proposed greenhouse gas regulation. Specifically, the comments
concern the agency’s proposed Prevention of Significant Deterioration
and Title V Greenhouse Gas Tailoring Rule.

Schwarzenegger
Appoints Acting Director of CalRecycle
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed
Margo Reid Brown to be the chief deputy director and acting director of
the state’s Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery

• Hauled to Glory
No one who witnessed Archie Lee Wells’ casket rolling slowly toward
the graveyard on the forklift of a garbage truck would question the
man’s devotion to his profession. A garbage truck driver for 20 years,
Wells succumbed to a malignant brain tumor in December at age 43. Before
the end, he made it clear that he should be conveyed to his final rest
by the Mack truck he drove for Western Waste Services (WWS) in Twin
Falls, Idaho.

• Robert (Bob) G. Hoppe, the longtime chairman and owner of
Romeoville, Ill.-based Perkins Manufacturing, died on Dec. 25, 2009. He
was 80.
In 1970, Hoppe acquired Stanton Equipment, a La Grange, Ill.-based
equipment distributor. Five years later, he purchased Perkins. Hoppe
conceived the firm’s TuckAway residential cart tipper. He held a seat
on the firm’s Board of Directors until five years ago, and his three
children will continue to serve on the board.
Survivors include his wife, Julianna; his daughters, Cheryl Waite and
Julie Schneider; his son, Robert Hoppe; his grandchildren, Alicia Waite
and Kristin Schneider; and his sister, Georgene Norris. Messages of
