Sets Date for Fourth-Quarter and Year-End Earnings
Release
Phoenix-based Republic Services will release its
fourth-quarter 2009 and overall 2009 earnings reports on Thursday, Feb.
11. At 5 p.m. EST on that same day, the firm will hold an investor
conference call to discuss the results.

Pennsylvania
Invests in Projects That Will Use Waste to Generate
Energy
The state of Pennsylvania is investing $5 million of
federal funds in eight projects that will use materials such as food
processing waste to generate electricity and natural gas. The funds were
allocated to the state by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act.

Alameda
County Begins Fining Violators of Plant Debris Ban
On Jan. 1, Alameda County, Calif., began issuing fines
to those who violate the county’s requirement that plant debris be
separated from regular trash. The county defines plant debris as grass,
leaves, shrubbery, vines, and tree branches and trimmings.

Durham,
N.C., Awards Recycling Contract to Sonoco
Durham, N.C., has awarded a two-year contract to
collect and process recyclables from residential and commercial
properties to Sonoco Recycling. The company provides recycling services
for 13 municipalities in the surrounding area.

• The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is sponsoring a
competition for videos that promote the concept of “reducing, reusing
and recycling” solid waste. Deadline to submit a video in the contest,
which is called “Our Planet, Our Stuff, Our Choice,” is Feb. 16.
The entries should be either 30 seconds or one minute in length. The
first-place winner will receive $2,500, the second-place winner $1,500
and the third-place winner $1,000. The winners will be announced in
April 2010 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
