Recognizes Landfill Gas Projects
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA)
Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) has recognized eight landfill
methane capture projects for “innovation in generating renewable
energy and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.”

Pilot Program Permits Landfills to Accept Oil
and Natural Gas Waste
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality
(DEQ) is conducting a pilot program that allows three Type I landfills
to accept exploration and production (E&P) waste. In Louisiana, Type I
landfills are those designed to accept industrial waste.

Release
Houston-based Waste Management will release its
fourth-quarter and full 2009 earnings reports on the morning of Tuesday,
Feb. 16. The firm will hold an analyst conference call at 10 a.m. EST on

• Trading
a Small Screen for One Big One
Atlanta’s Fernbank Museum has found a great way to encourage e-waste
recycling. According to TreeHugger, from Jan. 15-24, the museum is
offering free tickets for the IMAX documentary “Wild Ocean” to
people who turn in an old cell phone for recycling.

• Hauled to Glory
No one who witnessed Archie Lee Wells’ casket rolling slowly toward
the graveyard on the forklift of a garbage truck would question the
man’s devotion to his profession. A garbage truck driver for 20 years,
Wells succumbed to a malignant brain tumor in December at age 43. Before
the end, he made it clear that he should be conveyed to his final rest
by the Mack truck he drove for Western Waste Services (WWS) in Twin
Falls, Idaho.

• Dave Wagers has joined Beaverton, Ore.-based Routeware as vice
president of operations. The firm is a manufacturer of routing software.
Wagers will manage all areas of customer support.
According to a company press release, “Wagers has more than 35 years
of experience in both management and operations … [He] comes to
Routeware from the high technology information services and software
industry. He has extensive knowledge in client services, operations,
hardware engineering, general management, business development and
strategic planning with both Fortune 500 companies as well as
start-ups.”
• The Washington-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI)
is accepting entries for its Design for Recycling Award.
According to an ISRI press release, the “Design for Recycling Award
honors a program, company, or individual whose product or program design
has incorporated one or more of the following: a reduction in the number
of different recyclable materials; a reduction or elimination of
hazardous constituents; an increased yield of the product’s
recyclables; an improvement in the safety of recycling; a design that
allows for easy disassembly for recycling.”
The most recent award was presented last year to furniture manufacturer
Herman Miller.
Companies interested in being considered for the award should send a
letter detailing how they have incorporated the Design for Recycling
concept to Mark Reiter; Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries; 1615 L
Street, N.W.; Suite 600; Washington, D.C. 20036-5610. The deadline for
submissions is March 2.
